M12 Cook and Talk #4: with Picciotto
Friday 20 April 2018, 7 to 10pm, Teatro Garibaldi, Palermo
For the fourth Manifesta 12 Cook and Talk, Palermitan rapper, Christian “Picciotto”, and his family will cook together with all participants delicious dishes, and will talk about the project, “Memorie in Rima”, realised in collaboration with Manifesta 12 Education Department and local students and citizens.
Christian Paterniti aka “Picciotto” is a rapper and social worker, active in contrasting school dropout by adopting rap and creative writing workshops in schools. His rap music speaks about social denunciation, with strong tones. For more than ten years, Picciotto has been working in different popular neighborhoods of Palermo, trying to raise awareness among minors, former prisoners, and young drop-outs about the art of writing and music as meaningful means of social redemption and emancipation.
Together with Manifesta 12 Education Department, Picciotto has been working on the project “Memorie in Rima – Magione Community Project” by organising a musical workshop for the students of the school Amari-Roncalli-Ferrara. The project aims at gathering and composing collective memories of the residents of Piazza Magione (stories, photographs, and objects). Such ephemera will contribute to an exhibition which will be held at Teatro Garibaldi at the end of May, with the aim of telling the larger history of Piazza Magione from the thousands of hidden micro-histories of its residents.
The event is free but seats are limited. No booking required. Drinks will be available at Caffè Letterario Garibaldi.
M12 Cook and Talk #3: with MASBEDO
Wednesday 7 March 2018, 7 to 10pm, Teatro Garibaldi, Palermo
Masbedo is an artistic collective founded by Nicolò Massazza and Iacopo Bedogni in 1999 in Milan. For almost twenty years Masbedo has mingled together visual arts, installation, performance art practices and cinema, approaching each of these genres in a very personal way. Masbedo is interested in incommunicability, and in the relationship between production and communication, developing an intimate research that yet also touches upon socio-political and anthropological-cultural issues. Its strategy is focused on deepening the pictorial aspects of the video so to involve the spectator in environments that the artists model themselves. One of the most significant outcomes of their research is the creation of original video-performances that allow the viewer to literally enter the video-space and radically affect the creative gesture behind it. Gianfranco Maraniello describes the work of the duo as follows: “Their need of working in pairs gets clearer if seen as a way to literally unmask the drive thrusts that are such an essential part of the work: namely, it prevents them from determining the primacy of an ego by linking the deconstruction of one’s artistic ideas with the logic of reciprocity. Leaving aside all customs, habitat, and his worldly certainty, the individual transfers his fantasies into the shareable space of the imaginary. Writing is the first form of alienation and emancipation from the fragility of one’s own solitude. In the artistic adventure, planning becomes not only communication, but also communion. The video is used as a functional tool to express and narrate such experiences of getting lost in translation because it gives both inspiration and reverie to the construction of images that are not defined yet. Another important aspect of their work is the similarity between the way of working of Iacopo and Nicolò, and the condition of their actors. All lived experienced by the artists are played out in their projects in the form of a self-analysis. The starting point of their works is the projection of impulses that are felt through and expressed by a process of mutual recognition and acceptance prompted by their alter ego.
For the third Manifesta 12 Cook and Talk, Masbedo will make a performance that will force attendees and diners to alternate the tasting of food prepared throughout the evening to the manipulation of that which seems to matter the most in our everyday life: the digital image. Participants and diners of the M12 Cook and Talk will observe the artists recording with two different cameras, and will discuss with them the visual sequences that will be projected on the screen at the same time. During the evening, the Masbedo will also project some stills taken from various films and documentaries, in order to discuss with Manifesta 12 guests such snapshots of life dealing with issues of power, mystery, form and status.
If you are interested in submitting your questions or opinions, please check our Facebook account and comment on the ‘Cook and Talk’ event page using the hashtag #M12CookAndTalk. Your questions will be the starting point of the discussion on that evening.
The event is free but seats are limited. No booking required. Drinks will be available at Caffè Letterario Garibaldi.
